The Griot

A Griot is a West African poet, praise singer, and wandering musician, considered a repository of oral tradition. According to Paul Oliver in his book "Savannah Syncopators":
"Though [the griot] has to know many traditional songs without error, he must also have the ability to extemporize on current events, chance incidents and the passing scene. His wit can be devastating and his knowledge of local history formidable."

So the Griot will tell us some true about the history and the present of all countries the Phoenicia passed or visited.
And he will also tell us a lot about the extensive music and culture, the literature, the art and much more of this countries...

Maybe some will be irritated because we publish a critical report and directly following something about music or so...
Thats Africa and also in many other parts of the world: The beauty and the misery of human life are close- knit...and daily experience for many people!

Dominique Grassineau- Medical on Mayotte- gave us the idea for this site. So she gets the first report here. Dominique and her friends visited the Phoenicia on Mayotte and they took some really nice pictures we publish in this gallery
and she tell us some about the "backgrounds" on Mayotte- about the desperate and often dying people there.
We like to demonstrate our respect for her engagement!

At first we like to give some information about the kora and you can hear the "King of Kora" with this magical instrument- based on a pumpkin! From time to time we will post some more pearls of african and (later) arabic music. So watch this part again from time to time-
All music- tips here are hand- picked.
